We sometimes required verification to help protect our users from abuse. Please fill out the form below so that we can verify your identity by sending you a text message via SMS.

If your account has been disabled, please either fill out the form below (we’ll send a text message to your mobile phone), or contact support to restore access to your account without using a phone.

I asked to verify my identity by sending activation code to my phone via SMS when i was registering gmail account for my brother. I also experienced the same thing before, about a few months ago. At the first time i saw this verification, i thought it was just a fluke. big grin

Select your Country, fill your Mobile phone number in the form, then click Send activation code to my mobile phone. Within few seconds, you will either receive SMS from Google or click try sending it again. After you received SMS from Google, get the code, type it in the next page, and click Verify.

I put the format of my phone number like this: +62 (International Dialing Code for Indonesia) 856xxxx47 (my mobile phone number) big grin

On the top page has been clearly written: We sometimes required verification.
So, it doesn’t always ask your phone number for identity verification purpose and i don’t know when will it ask for the next SMS verification. big grin

Quote from Gmail Help – SMS account verification

One of the reasons we’re offering this new way to sign up for Gmail is to help protect our users and combat abuse. Spam and abuse protection are two things we take very seriously, and our users have been very happy with the small amount of spam they’ve received in Gmail. We take many measures to ensure that spammers have a difficult time sending their spam messages, getting these messages delivered, or even obtaining a Gmail address (spammers will often use many different addresses to send spam). Sending invitation codes to mobile phones is one way to address this, as the number of addresses created per phone number can be limited.

I think the cookies will affect whether you will be asked for such verification or not. So, I tried signin using existing account, signout again, then register new account.
I was wrong, Google did not ask verification.

Google might asking such verification if I register multiple accounts from same IP address, to prevent mass account creation from same IP address.
But I was wrong again, I have registered three new accounts with same IP address, but still no such verification.

So far, I conclude that this verification due to IP marked Spam. So, Google will verify every registration that comes from the Blacklisted IP or Spam IP. Just my two cents, because I do not know for sure. But a few things that I know, I use a dynamic IP, which is always changing, and many IP addresses are already blacklisted. Also, I often rejected on IRC network.

I think it is completely random; in some cases it should be shown when user, for example, is missing Javascript, but most of verification is done on a random basis

Yes, but I still assume there is the trigger for such a random system.
Again, just my 2 cetns big grin

Funny, i have one mobile, so if i want to create email accounts to my 4 kids and my wife, i have to buy 5 mobiles too?
    Hell that sucks

I think you don’t need 5 mobiles, but try to clear cookies, use different browser, different username, or even change your IP address instead.
