Before you read the following post, it’s recommended to read this post Fixing iTunes error message: The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported instead.
If this problem persist after you updated iPhone firmware to 3.1.3, read this guide Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 firmware version using redsn0w 0.9.4
Updated it to iOS4? had this problem on iPhone 4?
You need to activate your iPhone using official SIM card or phonebook card, while most recent jailbreaking tools do not support hacktivation.
The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.
Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store
to receive a replacement SIM card.
If you bought your iPhone from overseas (US, UK, AU, etc) and you’re not living in the country where the iPhone originally come from, this problem may appear. In example: You bought the iPhone from eBay, or one of family member outside your country give it to you as present/gift or you bought BlackMarket phone for cheap price. This could be happen due to network lock or error from iPhone itself, in some cases. I experienced this problem, due to network lock restriction. After update 2.2 Firmware to 3.0 Firmware, the iphone just has a picture of the USB pointing to an iTunes icon. When i unlock it, it says emergency calls only.
If you connect your iPhone and open iTunes, then you get same problem, this post might be helpful.
In my case, iPhone was locked to AT&T, so i need AT&T Sim card in order to get it work. Alternatively, use Turbo SIM. But i don’t have neither Turbo SIM nor AT&T SIM Card.
So, here is steps to get rid of this message :
1. I updated my iPhone by reading this tutorial: How to Upgrade iPhone to 3.0 Firmware, using the second way. Then, i got this error message.
2. I did Jailbrake my iPhone using RedSn0w. Read this post: How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.0 Firmware Using RedSn0w (Windows)
3. Now your iPhone should be back to normal.
note: I’m using the SAME file for redsn0w and iTunes. You must choose the firmware you downloaded when you’re jailbreaking using redsn0w.
If you can’t access your iPhone using iTunes due to this error, put your iPhone into DFU mode.

you can try to upgrade your firmware in step way, using the second way by downloading & restore the firmware.
then use RedSn0w to jailbrake your phone.

thanks ryan, the problem is that it just stalls, iam doing everythin correctly, might i add, the phone was bought in US, and i dont have the ” atand ” card and i am now in the UK….. the phone has been restored in itunes at 3.0.1 or whatever the latest is and i have the restore file ispw thing but when i go to shirft and select the file manually, it gives an error code….. do you have msn maybe you could help, id really appreciate it

I have succesfully Jailbroken my iPhone with redsn0w, installed ultrasn0w (so i can use any SIM I want). The iPhone works perfectly. However, I can’t sync with iTunes. I get this message: The sim card inserted in this Iphone does not appear to be supported.
Anyone any ideas? I tried Jail breaking, disabling/enabling ultrasn0w, upgrading itunes 8 -> itunes 9, but I still can’t sync my iPhone with iTunes.

Hi Marinus,
You haven’t hacktivate your iPhone.
Back up your data in iPhone, do a complete DFU restore back to stock, then re-jailbreak (it will hacktivate automatically) and re-unlock.

I resolved the problem, by letting iTunes restore my Phone (holding SHIFT while selecting restore) and selected the same image as for redsn0w.

Yes, you need to jailbreak your iPhone if you want it back to normal usage.

I guess it was update to 3.1 firmware. Is it Factory Unlock (FU) or Software Unlock (SU) ?
You can jailbreak 3.1 firmware, but if it’s not factory unlock, you won’t be able to use other SIM Card but official SIM Card approved by apple..

I have jailbreaked my iPhone some time ago, and I had to reinstall Windows on my PC, and now that I installed iTunes 9, iTunes keeps saying I need to put another SIMcard in my iPhone. I don’t want to keep changing the SIM all the time! I have RedSn0w and everything, it has worked flawlessly until today!
And do you guys know how to sync all my apps and music to my PC? Don’t want it to disappear!

you can use xilisoft iphone transfer to backup your data from iPhone to PC.
Put your iPhone into DFU mode, restore via iTunes, then jailbreak using blackra1n

Ha! Figured it out, but thanks for reading my post! After a little fiddeling with Cyder I managed to update Ultrasn0w (sorry for writing redsn0w in my post) and now everything works like charm. Now all I have to do is figuring out what to do with all my apps and music on the iPhone.
Anyone has any ideas? I would really appreciate it.

So, the sim card error message has been disappear now?
If so, you can do backup your iPhone content to PC using iTunes.
Right click your iPhone name on iTunes → Back up

Hi Ryan, I have a 2nd generation (8G) Iphone that it was already unlocked/jailbroken when a friend gave it to me. I live in Costa Rica and used it without problems until today that I went to the Apple website to upgrade iphone software to version 3.0
After I finished downloading the software update Itunes tried to restart my Iphone and I got the message that we all know by now “The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported. Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store to receive a replacement SIM card”
I have the usb and Itunes logos in the phone and it only allows me to make “emergency calls” but I can’t access my Iphone home page. I have not idea what program was used to unlocked this Iphone, can I try to re-jailbrake it with PwnageTool? Otherwise, what should I do? Will I loose all the contents in the Iphone if I re-jailbrake it?
I would really appreciate your help

Hi Mariana,
You can simply jailbreak your iPhone.
All contents in your iPhone is already erased when you did update.
But iTunes will have a backup if you’ve synced your iPhone before
If you updated to 3.0, you can still jailbreak using redsn0w 0.8
If you updated to 3.1.2, you can read How to Jailbreak iPhone 3.1 Firmware (Windows)

Thanks Ryan, I’ll re-jailbrake/unlock my Iphone 2G on OS 3.1 using Pwnage tool for Mac, this takes about an hour so I’ll let you know how it went, thanks!

Hi Ryan, it DIDN’T work! I don’t know what happened, I went through all the steps of the jailbrake process using Pwnage tool for Mac and in the last step, when the restore was completed, it was supposed to restart iPhone, and when it did, the same message was given in Itunes about the SIM card and I still have the USB to Itunes logos in the Iphone screen… What else can I do?!
A few questions about the other option you give in your page:
- Remove the Sim card
- Reboot the phone in DFU mode
- Restore the 3.0 software while the phone is in DFU mode
- Remove sim and connect to itunes
- Remove from itunes and put back in sim
- Reboot iphone
How do I restore the 3.0 software while in DFU mode?
When you say “reboot in DFU mode” means that I have to hold down the power button for 10 sec, the release the power botton and keep holding the home button for another 10 sec, right? When I do this the Mac logo (apple) shows in the Iphone screen for about a minute and then a message that tells me that there’s not SIM car inserted, to insert one…

When starting up REDSNOW you MUST choose to install :
CYDIA
UNLOCK
After that you have to browse in redsnow to 2 files :
BootLoaders
BL 3.9
BL 4.6
You can download the Bootloaders at the bottom page from here :

When you go further you have to turn off the Iphone and leave the cable connected to the computer then click on Next in redsnow
Hold power button 3 seconds
Now keep holding that power button and push also now as extra the home button in for 10 seconds
Release the power button, but KEEP holding the home button for about 30 seconds.
This will start the Jailbreak and UNLOCK your iphone both together.
After the jailbreak process is finished you will be able to enter your simPIN and you wont have to activate your iphone via Itunes!

Hi Ryan. I have an iphone 3G Modem firmware 02.28.00
It was jailbroken for me in UK when brand new(I don’t know which prog was used but I have Cydia and Installer). I am abroad now for a year and not going back to UK straight away so I need help here if you can. I have never updated the phone software again after that. Never had any problems until today. As usual, had my MacBook software update done(iTunes was updated too – maybe that is the problem?) and then connected my iphone. Got the message “SIM is not supported blah, blah, blah…” The phone is working fine otherwise. Calls, texts and everything else are not affected. The only thing is that I can’t update my music, pics and calendars. Please advise what to do. Should I update my iphone Modem firmware? I know that newer software is better but I am worried that I won’t be able to do everything correctly and might block my iphone to “unusable” state. All I want is a minimum of changes – just to get the iphone to upload music, pics and calendars. If you believe that I should update the Modem firmware – I really want to have all the latest features – please tell me how and what firmware to update to(what’s unlockable now?), what programs to use and everything else.
I would really appreciate your help with this.

Hi Siaerhei, you can update your iPhone 3G software without problem.
It was unlockable by using blackra1n, also hacktivate your iPhone so you can sync musics, videos, etc to your iPhone.
However, upgrading your iPhone software will affect to apps on your iPhone. Some apps may not work if it doesn’t have updated version for the new firmware.

I unlocked and jailbrake my IPhone 3G,
The phone works perfectly ect…
the only issue i have is that i cannot connecto ti Itunes, i see the iphone but it gives me the error message saying:
“The sim cars inserted in this phone does not appear to be supported”
Can anyone help me? i called my service provider and apple, they are uselless

My iphone 3gs was working well for some time. Then, he just ask me to restore it on itune. I have to upgrade itune to the last version as the security upgrade because itune will not work without it. Then, i restore my iphone. He work for a couple of hour and then ask me to restore it again. I did it. Then he work again for a couple of hour and ask me again to retose it. I did it again. But after that, he get stuck with the itune logo and emergency call only. I have plug it to itune but itune said that there is no sim card installed at all time. I have try to restore it again and again, not working. I realy need it. I am traveling for a year across America and it’s my phone, my music, my gps. I dont know what to do.
I am now in Alaska.
Please, help me.

Okay guys.. I have had this problem for a week now, and I don’t like to leave things that are to do with my iPhone on the side, so I actually booked an appointment with the Genius Bar located in the Apple Store.
I found out that this problem of error messages, and the above picture posted in this forum are coming up because you are trying to activate your phone again with a sim card which has not come with the iPhone when you have purchased it.
I am on the network o2 and I was advised to use an o2 Sim Card which on the back of it says, 3GP9* or something similar. As the 3G/3GS iPhones require these type of Sim Cards in order to get it activated again.
I’m sure that this is the solution how to make your iPhone again, it’s not the fact that it needs to be jailbroken/blah/blah.

I updated my 3GS to ISO4 and got this error. The phone has the same sim in it that I’ve always used (official carrier) and is from the UK. My IMEI number hasn’t changed so I really don’t know what’s wrong with it. Any suggestions as I can’t jailbreak it!

Hi Ryan, Good to see the postings / Tutorials and help that you providing over here. I’m in need of your help!! I have a 3G Iphone purchased 1 yr back from US/AT&T. I happened to Jailbreak and also was using it in OUT OF US. Unforturnately, Due to the OS4.0 craze, I happened to update blindly and got wipedoff with the Jailbreak/Cydia App and Locked my phone with only Emergency Call feature. Now My Iphone3g is showing the above “Sim Card doeesn’t support blah blah”. Need your help in this regard. Currently, My phone is showing the USB cable picture. Currently, I don’t have the AT&T Sim and also I’m out of US. I have a Vodafone Sim that is currently inserted. I understand phone got locked. Need Step by Step procedure to unlock the same without the AT&T Provider Sim. I’m not a big that much techi to understand but will try to get through, once if you provide the Steps. Also, I’m adding you to my Yahoo Contact list. Any help in this regard is highly appreciated. Earlier version of the Iphone could be 3.1.3.

Thanx, This thing really worked.
I restored to 3.1.2 and it showed me that the sim is not compatible, then i used this idea n jailbreaked with Redsn0w 0.9.2 and there it was, working just fine. Then i unlocked using untrasn0w and everything is up n running.

Hi ryan! I need your help! I have a 16g 3G Iphone and i livee in australia and my dad got me the iphone from Sweden (Talia, the phone company) it was working perfectly until i updated the IOS 4 Software onto it and then it came up with the..”The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.” I dont know what to do. how do i jailbreak it? I hope you can please please help me
Also when i was using it when it was actually working i did notice it had an app called ‘Cydia’ i think thats it. Hope you can please helppp

hey ..RYan…dude…i hav a iphone 3gs and couple of days bak i mistakenly updated it to ios4 ..then the phone was on bt there was no signal in the network no service so i click on the restored button but after restoring it the iphone doesnt gets on it just shows an an wire connected to iphone .when i connect it to my pc nd open itunes it says.THE SIM CARD INSERTED IN THIS IPHONE DOES NOW APPEAR TO BE SUPPORTED.so now what should i do can u please help me .i triest it by going to dfu mode bt stilla gain the same thing happens after restoring.!!..

Hi ; please would you help me i updated my i phone 3G 16 g to 4.0 firmware now says sim card not supported i bout the phone in Canada was jail broke and unlocked i live in iraq now help please thx very mutch

NOTHING worked for me.
I still get the “Your sim card blah blah blah” message in itunes, and noone is able to help me…. this sucks. I HATE this phone.

hey, everytime i plug my iphone in the computer it would always say;
The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.
Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone.
Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit supported Carrier’s store
to receive a replacement SIM card.
i could not update or restore my iphone the stupid message would always be there

Ali, you will need either official SIM-card or phonebook card to activate your iPhone
