First way

1. Run iTunes 8.2 then connect your iPhone 3G to your computer using iPhone’s USB Cable.
2. In Device lists, select your iPhone
3. Click “Check for Update” button in Summary pane
4. Click “Download and Install“. Do not disconnect your iPhone until the update has finished.
If iTunes automatically detect new update for your iPhone, you don’t need to do those steps.
Second way
If you have slow Internet connection or you need to install the firmware offline, you can following these steps below:
1. Download iPhone 3.0 Firmware (click to download) Direct Firmware Link – Download Manager supported.
2. Run iTunes 8.2 then connect your iPhone 3G to your computer using iPhone’s USB Cable.
3. In Device lists, select your iPhone.
4. Click “Restore” button.
5. Select the iPhone 3.0 Firmware you have downloaded in step 1. Rename the file name from iPhone1_2_3.0_7A341_Restore.zip to iPhone1_2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw (if needed).
6. Do not disconnect your iPhone until the update has finished.

September 26th, 2009 at 7:34 PMThank you for your useful article, but when I tried to restore the iPhone firmware by the second way using iTunes v9.0 I faced an error message says:
“The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1015)”.
I uninstalled iTunes 9.0, installed iTunes 8.2 and restored the firmware with the second way again and I faced the same error.
I use:
Windows Vista 32 bit
iPhone 3G 8 GB came from Canada and I used it in other country.Thank you for your help…

September 26th, 2009 at 8:07 PMRestore your iPhone in DFU mode, then use redsn0w to jailbreak your iPhone.
To downgrade iTunes, you need to uninstall it completely also in registry entries.
